Starting CAWI work
This topic describes how to set up, test and start CAWI surveys in AskiaField, using either your own sample or sample supplied by an external panel provider.

Setting up a CAWI survey
To set up a CAWI survey:
- Add a task to the CCA and define its properties; alternatively, reload the task if it has been modified (see below).
- Define quotas, if required.
- Test your survey (see below).
- To begin fieldwork, depending on whether you are using an external sample provider or managing your own sample, follow the appropriate procedure below.
Note: The system will stop allowing interviewing when the target sample size is reached, and will halt individual interviews if they fall into a quota that is already full.
Testing a CAWI survey
To test a CAWI survey:
- Ensure you have set up the survey in Supervisor, as described above.
- In the
tasks window, right-click your survey task, click web, then test survey. Any responses entered will not be saved.
- You can also allow co-workers or clients to test the survey by selecting
web then copy test link. You can then paste the link into another document (e.g. an email message) in order to send the link.
Starting a survey using an external panel provider
If you are using an external sample provider to manage your sample and send invitations, you do not need to set up a sample list or email template in Supervisor. Instead, you need to send the correct link, and an explanation of its syntax, to the provider.
To start the survey if using an external sample provider:
- In the tasks window, right-click the survey task, select
web, then click copy DoExternalPanel link. You can then paste this link into an email message to be sent to the sample provider.
- Explain to the provider that they need to replace the BROKERPANELID field in the URL with the unique respondent ID of their choice. For more details, see using askiaext links.

- In the tasks window, right-click the task, select
properties, and finally click the webprod tab.

If you have not already done so, upload the survey to the WebProd connection. To do so, right-click the WebProd connection and select add this survey.

To put the survey online, right-click it and select the set online command.

Starting a survey using your own sample
If you are providing your own sample, you need to set up the sample file in Supervisor, associate it with the survey task and then send out your DoPanel links by email.
To start the survey if providing your own sample:
- Link your sample list to your task. To do so, set the sample list's
task property. See adding or editing a sample list for details.
- Define a template for your invitation emails (using the mail templates tab of the sample list properties).
- For further details on the DoPanel links, see using askiaExt links.
- To send the invitations, in the
lists window select the sample list, then in the lists tab of the ribbon, select start mailing. Alternatively, you can right-click the sample list, select web, then start invitation mailing.
