coding_view

This window has several areas:

You can resize the three largest areas in the centre by clicking on the gaps between the areas and dragging the mouse.

The menu

coding_menu

The menu is located at the top of the screen, and has the following controls available:

Command Description

Language

This list contains the survey's languages, and shows the currently selected language. Changing the language will change the language that long captions are displayed in.

Note: this is not to be confused with the coding interface language, which you can change at the login screen, or in the preferences window.
Note: changing the language of the survey does not restrict the coding to interviews which were answered in the selected language; to do this, you must create a routing instruction when you create your coding group (see the askiafield Getting Started Guide for details).

History

Displays a list of previous coding sessions for the project, and allows you to retrieve the interviews that were coded in those sessions.

Get work

Requests new interviews for coding, if any are available. The number of interviews that will be loaded is determined by the option interview retrieval, which can be set in the preferences window.

Projects

Returns you to the project window.

Grid view

Opens the grid coding view.

History view

Shows the history view, which displays earlier (historic) coding.

Save changes

Saves any unsaved changes. This button is only active when there is at least one unsaved change; if automatic saving is enabled in the preferences window, then this button is not used.

Undo/redo

Allow you to reverse (undo) previous change(s) or reinstate (redo) changes you have undone.

The answer context and answer history panes

The answer context pane shows the questions chosen as context questions during the creation of the coding group, and the answers given for these questions in the current interview.

Beneath it is the answer history pane, which shows any historic coding for the current interview.

coding_answer_context_view

The source question and answers panes

The source question pane displays the details of the source question (the open question that is to be coded). Below it, the answers pane displays the answer given to the source question in the current interview. A red answer means that the answer is not yet coded. You can change the answer text by clicking it and editing as required.

You can navigate the list of interviews and answers by using the arrows keys, or by clicking the navigation buttons at the bottom of this area.

The index of the current interview is shown in the textbox; selecting this textbox and typing an index will move the current interview to the one you have chosen. For example, typing "13" into this box will make the 13th interview the current interview (if, of course, there are at least 13 interviews available). The buttons, in order, move you to the first interview, the previous interview, the next interview, or the last interview.

coding_interviews_pane

The codeframe pane

This pane displays the responses of the target question (the target question is defined in the coding group). This is where you select the appropriate code for the answer displayed in the answers frame.

coding_code_frame_pane

Once you check (tick) a response in the code frame, your interview is considered to be coded (and the answer in the source question pane is changed from red to black). You can select or de-select a response by double clicking on it.

The caption for a response can be changed by clicking on the text of the caption and editing it as required.

The buttons at the bottom of this pane are as follows:

Button Description

coding_copy_icon

Copy the pattern of selected response(s) to the clipboard. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard short-cut ctrl-c.

For example, if responses 01, 02 and 03 are selected (ticked), then these codes will be copied to the clipboard.

coding_paste_icon

Paste the pattern of selected response(s) from the clipboard. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard short-cut ctrl-v.

In the above example, this would select responses 01, 02 and 03 (as this is the pattern you copied previously).

coding_add_response

Add a new response.

coding_remove_response

Remove the selected response.

The information bar

The information bar displays, in real time, the count of interviews you have available to work on in the current project, the count of coded interviews, the coding session time and the name of the project. If there are any unsaved changes, the name of the project will have an asterix (*) appended.
